Ketamine: A Different Approach to Treating Depression
Ketamine was originally developed and used as an anesthetic. Researchers later discovered that it can also have powerful antidepressant effects. Unlike many traditional antidepressants, ketamine may begin improving depression symptoms relatively quickly—sometimes within hours or days.
Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that works primarily by blocking NMDA receptors in the brain. This is different from many traditional antidepressants and may help explain why ketamine can provide relief for some people who have not responded well to other treatments.
A common effect of ketamine is dissociation, which can cause changes in perception, a feeling of being disconnected from your surroundings, dizziness, or temporary confusion. Because of these effects, ketamine treatments are carefully monitored in a clinical setting.
Ketamine can be given in several ways, including IV, IM, and intranasally. Spravato (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray used for certain patients with treatment-resistant depression. Many insurance plans provide coverage for Spravato when patients meet the appropriate criteria.
At Full Circle Psychiatry and Mental Health, we take an individualized approach to ketamine treatment. We will help determine whether it may be appropriate for you and closely monitor your treatment throughout the process.
Antidepressants: Medication for Depression and Anxiety
Antidepressants are medications commonly used to treat depression and anxiety. They are well-studied and have been shown to be effective for many people. While every person responds differently, antidepressants can be an important part of improving mood, reducing anxiety, and helping people get back to their daily lives.
There are several types of antidepressants, including SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, and several other medication classes. These medications work in different ways, but many affect neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
Using an antidepressant does not mean that someone simply has a “chemical imbalance” or is lacking a particular neurotransmitter. Mental health conditions are complex and can be influenced by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. Antidepressants can help address some of the biological factors involved in these conditions.
Antidepressants are generally considered safe and are well tolerated by many people. Side effects are often mild and may improve as the body adjusts to the medication. Sometimes it takes several trials to find the medication and dose that work best for an individual. Differences in genetics, metabolism, other medications, and individual brain chemistry can all influence how someone responds.
At Full Circle Psychiatry and Mental Health, we take an individualized approach to medication management. Our goal is to find an effective treatment that fits your symptoms, your body, and your life.
Therapy/Counseling: Building Skills for a Healthier Life
Therapy can be an effective way to work through many of life's challenges. It can help with mental health conditions, trauma, stress, relationship problems, and negative thought patterns. Therapy can also provide tools and support for navigating difficult situations and making positive changes.
There are many different types of therapy, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), family systems therapy, and EMDR. Different approaches work well for different people and concerns. Often, the most effective treatment involves combining techniques from several therapeutic approaches.
A strong therapeutic relationship and good rapport between the therapist and client are important parts of successful therapy. Feeling comfortable, understood, and respected can make it easier to be open and work through difficult topics.
Therapy should be provided by a qualified, licensed mental health professional who can appropriately assess your needs and provide evidence-based treatment. At Full Circle Psychiatry and Mental Health, we believe therapy should be individualized to the person—not simply based on a diagnosis.
Exercise and Mental Health
Exercise is one of the most effective ways to support both physical and mental health. Regular physical activity can improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, support better sleep, and contribute to overall well-being.
Exercise also affects the brain. Physical activity influences neurotransmitters and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which plays an important role in brain health, learning, and the development and maintenance of connections between brain cells.
Resistance training and weight-bearing exercise can be especially beneficial. In addition to supporting muscle and bone health, resistance training has been associated with improvements in mood and overall mental health.
Exercise works best as part of a broader approach to wellness. Along with healthy sleep, nutrition, therapy, and medication when appropriate, regular exercise can have a meaningful impact on mental health. Start with an amount that is realistic for you and gradually build toward up to five days of exercise per week, incorporating a variety of activities and regular resistance or weight-bearing exercise.
